My 8-Year Embroidery Journey

Looking back at where it all started, it is hard to believe I first picked up an embroidery needle about eight years ago in a workshop right here in Bristol.
Honestly? I wasn’t hooked immediately. For a while, my creative heart belonged to lino printing, and embroidery was just something I dabbled in now and again.
But as I kept returning to the needle, I discovered something special: the ability to create beautiful, one-off gifts for the people I loved. Those early projects weren't just about the finished piece; they were my way of practicing and keeping the skill alive.
The Experimentation Phase
Like many of you, my "early years" were full of trial and error. Some pieces turned out great, others... not so much! But my time at university taught me that you have to explore every avenue before you find what truly clicks.
I spent a long time experimenting with different styles and techniques:
Creating playful textures with layered felt.
Combining machine stitching for bold base colors with intricate hand-embroidered details on top.
Trying my hand at everything from vibrant giraffes to delicate botanical wreaths.
Through this process, I found the mindfulness element of the craft. It became less about the "perfect" gift for someone else and more about a meditative practice for myself.
The Turning Point
After about four years of dabbling, everything changed. I was in the middle of a secondary art teacher placement in the South East, facing a significant mental health crisis. In that difficult space, I turned to embroidery for comfort and designed my very first kit.
That moment was a wake-up call. I realized this wasn't just a hobby; it was what I wanted to do with my life.
Coming Home to Bristol
With a new sense of purpose, I moved back to Bristol and poured all my energy into my craft. That spark led to:
Launching my Embroidery Kits: So others could find the same joy in stitching.
Hosting Workshops: Returning to where it all began to teach others.
Local Markets: Connecting with the amazing creative community here.
My Giant Octopus: A massive project that really pushed the boundaries of what I could do with a needle and thread.
Every not-so-great experimental stitch from years ago was a stepping stone to where I am today. If you're currently in that dabbling phase, keep going—you never know where one workshop might eventually lead!
