My 8-Year Embroidery Journey
Looking back at where it all started, it is hard to believe I first picked up an embroidery needle about eight years ago in a workshop right here in Bristol. Honestly? I wasn’t hooked immediately. For a while, my creative heart belonged to lino printing, and embroidery was just something I dabbled in now and again. But as I kept returning to the needle, I discovered something special: the ability to create beautiful, one-off gifts for the people I loved. Those early projects

Creating Custom Mixed-Media Patches
There is something so satisfying about taking a classic denim jacket and turning it into a wearable piece of art. My boyfriends sister asked if I could embroider a denim jacket for her - and as always - I created a gigantic project for myself. This was a labor of love, but totally worth it. Here is how I brought this mushroom and wildflower design to life: Step 1: Design and Base Layers As always, the journey started on my iPad . I sketched out a full woodland composition, bu

From Charity Shop Find to Festival Favourite: My Symmetrical embroidered dress
There is nothing quite like the thrill of a charity shop score - finding that perfect blank canvas just waiting for a little bit of needle-and-thread magic. Last year, I picked up a simple navy linen shift dress that had great bones but needed a serious personality transplant. With Love Saves the Day 2025 in Bristol on the horizon, I knew exactly what I wanted to do: a bold, symmetrical floral piece that would pop against that deep navy blue. The Design Process: Digital to P

From Bristol to the Big Octopus: My Journey with the Humble Needle.
If you had told me back in 2018 that I’d be running hand embroidery workshops in Bristol, I might have laughed. My journey actually started at a workshop in Bristol, where I was split between hand embroidery and lino carving. To be honest? I preferred the lino. Embroidery felt a bit too precious for me; I didn't see that instant neatness I thought I needed. I kept it on the side of my project pile, occasionally dabbling in small things like Christmas cards and present labels,

Is "Advanced" embroidery actually hard? (Spoiler: No!)
When people see 3D embroidery—those beautiful, raised textures and woven elements—they often say, "I could never do that, it looks way too advanced." That’s exactly why I’m dropping the "Advanced" label and renaming this session the 3D & Sculptural Embroidery Workshop. The truth is, these "complex" looking masterpieces are actually just a series of simple, clever steps joined together. My goal for this workshop is to show you how to build height and unlock the secrets of rais

Why "Intermediate" is a scary word (and why we’re changing it!)
Let’s be real for a second - the word "Intermediate" feels a bit like a school exam, doesn’t it? It sounds like there might be a test at the end, or that you need to have spent years hunched over a hoop to qualify. Well, I’ve got a secret for you: You’re probably more ready than you think. I’ve decided to rebrand my Intermediate Workshop to the Texture & Detail Workshop. Why? Because that’s exactly what it is! It’s not a hurdle to jump over; it’s a "Level Up" for your creativ

He is complete!
I have completed my giant octopus embroidery! I think it's taken me about 15 months, round about 500 hours, and 40ish different colours. HE IS FABULOUS. I'm so pleased. And I even added some beads for that extra special shimmer. Although he is large (about A1 size), I have kept ir super simple with the stitching. I found it really medatative to just do long and short stitch - esentially colouring in with thread. I did do some chain sttiching for the leaves for a bit of differ

My Giant Octopus Embroidery
Hey everyone! I'm so excited to share my latest project with you all – a massive, A1-sized hand-embroidered piece! As someone who usually whips up A4 or A3 pieces in about a week, I decided to really challenge myself and go big this time. This piece is a labour of love, and it's been so rewarding to watch it come to life. I started by painting the basic shapes onto the fabric, and now I'm hand-embroidering each flower and detail. The piece features an octopus surrounded by fl
